Charlie Wade's Job Hunting and Employment FAQs

"How about hand delivering my resume to the employer?"

Just follow the method of sending in your resume the employer has requested or required, be that snail-mail, email, or fax. Showing up without an appointment to meet with someone in a business setting is presumptuous, it puts everyone in an awkward position, and it just isn't professional. If you don't know who to meet with by name, then this would just look that much more lame on your part.

(Remember, too, that just because you emailed or faxed your resume to 'someone' by name, that 'someone' may very well just be a dummy name used to route resumes to the correct real person instead, which is becoming more and more common. If you use the dummy name when you ask for someone to meet with at a potential employer, you're going end up looking pretty stupid.)

If you hope that the receptionist will put a good word in for you, don't bet on it. Receptionists are liked and disliked as much as any other employee, there is no guarantee that the hiring manager is going to care what he/she thinks... if that receptionist even cares enough to put any word in for you at all.

Few things impress employers more than simply following directions and not generating surprises. You can accommodate them on both counts by simply submitting your resume as they request.
